Lauter Tun for Beer Brewing
Brewing full-flavored beer requires not only skill but also the right equipment. One of the most important parts of brewing equipment is the lauter tun.
What is a lauter tun?
A lauter tun is a key vessel in a brewery, designed to separate sweet wort from spent grain. It has a thin false bottom with narrow slots that hold back solid grain while allowing liquid to pass through. During the lautering process, hot water is sprayed over the grain bed to wash out the sugars. The clear wort is then collected and transferred to the brew kettle.
Functions of the Lauter Tun
The lauter tun is used for a process called vorlauf, where wort is gently recirculated through the grain bed until it runs clear. A quality lauter tun is equipped with rotating rakes powered by a central drive. Depending on the size, it can have 2 to 6 rake arms. Each arm has blades that can be raised or lowered, helping to loosen and remove spent grain once the lautering is complete.
